Early Morning Fire Destroys Historic Digby Sawmill

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster):  A historic sawmill and museum in Meteghan, N.S. burned down in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Meteghan Fire Department chief Kevin Saulnier said the fire broke out some time before 4 a.m. at the Bangor Sawmill Museum.

Saulnier says the building was engulfed in flames when crews arrived and his department quickly called for assistance. 

No one was injured and crews were able to save some of the artifacts from the museum, said the fire chief.

The museum, located at 728 Maza Road, was a 19th-century water-powered turbine lumber sawmill on the Meteghan River.

According to Nova Scotia Canada, it was one of the last functioning mills of this kind in North America and “a reminder of the time when hundreds of such mills were seen along the many rivers of western Nova Scotia.”

There is no word yet on what caused the fire.
