DS Smith's Croatian Paper Mill Announces Switch to Green Energy

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The DS Smith BelišÄ‡e Paper Mill in Eastern Croatia announced major move aimed at reducing the annual carbon emissions from the mill. The strategic decision is predicted to cut annual carbon dioxide emissions from its papermaking operations by at least 23%.

The company has entered into a new partnership in switching to green energy. As part of the partnership, HEP Opskrba will ensure supply of green electricity to the plant. The green electricity will be produced from renewable sources, including solar, wind, biogas and eligible biomass. This will result in savings of up to 27,000 tonnes of carbon, which is equivalent to removing nearly 6,000 passenger vehicles off roads.

DS Smith press release noted that almost 60% of the energy requirements at the paper mill will be met with green electricity. The move will help Croatian operations to reduce its impact on environment.

Mario Puntaric, Director for HEP Opskrba stated that the partnership aims to protect natural resources. This will transform DS Smith as one of the biggest users of green electricity in the country. Furthermore, it will encourage other big companies to make similar moves, he added.

DS Smith had recently reiterated its commitment to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 30% relative production by 2030, as against the 2015 baseline.
