SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): DS Smith Viana Paper Mill in Portugal has reached a historic milestone by completing 50 years of operation. The mill founded in 1974, has seen extensive modernization over the years, increasing its capacity from 136,000 tonnes to 440,000 tonnes today.
In 2023, the corporation started an investment initiative worth €145 million to support its modernization initiatives. With the addition of some of the most cutting-edge papermaking technologies, the mill's annual carbon dioxide emissions have been reduced by almost 11,000 tonnes.
In October 2023, DS Smith finished renovating Paper Machine 4 (PM4), increasing the mill's capacity to produce and improving its operating effectiveness. The mill's agility has significantly improved as a result of the changes made to the press and forming sections. Steam use has decreased by about 15% when the new NipcoFlex Tandem press was installed. Additionally, it has led to a notable decrease in the number of paper breakage that occur during production.
The corporation is expected to make progress toward its goal of reaching net zero emissions by 2050 with the completion of the new recovery boiler by early 2025, which is expected to result in a major reduction in air emissions and a significant improvement in steam efficiency.
