DS Smith Survey Highlights Need for Extra Recycling Options

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The national survey recently conducted by European packaging major DS Smith revealed that residents prefer to have more recycling options corresponding to rise in recycling volumes.

Around 70% of the survey respondents noted that the recycling bins use to be mostly full, full or overflowing even before the scheduled day of collection. When the cans reach the end of their limit, 20% respondents admitted that they throw the recyclables into trash cans, which in turn may lead to ending them up in landfills. Surprisingly, nearly 40% said that they even stashed the recyclables in a neighbor’s bin.

The jump in e-commerce transactions, which witnessed significant acceleration during the Covid-19 pandemic times, has led to more number of packages to be recycled from homes. Over 40% of the survey participants noted that recycling volumes have increased considerably when compared with pre-Covid-19 period.

Nearly 40% of the survey respondents noted that they find their recycling bins full in two weeks' time. Also, 60% of those polled demanded bigger recycling bins to fit their needs. The participants also called for increased investments in domestic recycling systems.

The poll was conducted during the period from October 14^th to 18^th, among 1,000 respondents.
