Recent Copper Thefts Leave Pasadena Businesses Facing Costly Repairs

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Within the past week, several Pasadena businesses have been hit by copper wire thefts from rooftop air conditioning units, resulting in thousands of dollars in damage and repair costs.
Most recently, Sweet Red Peach on Arroyo Parkway and Petsadena Pet Hospital on S. Raymond Avenue were targeted.
While both businesses remain open, the thefts have created significant financial burdens, including the cost of portable air conditioning units, fans, and other temporary cooling equipment. The recent stretch of unseasonably high temperatures has also made working conditions more challenging for employees and less comfortable for customers.
Police are encouraging business owners and property managers to take steps to reduce the risk of rooftop HVAC thefts, including:
Restricting and securing rooftop access.
Installing heavy-duty, tamper-resistant steel cages around rooftop HVAC units, where feasible.
Keeping ladders locked and inaccessible when not in use.
Installing motion-activated security cameras or alarm systems that immediately alert business owners or property managers to unauthorized rooftop activity.
Working with landlords and property owners to improve rooftop security, particularly at leased commercial properties.
According to police, rooftop HVAC units are attractive targets because they are often out of public view and located on flat, easily accessible commercial buildings. A layered approach to security can significantly reduce the risk of theft.
Police also warn that copper theft is not only costly but extremely dangerous.
