SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Lundin Mining has lowered its 2026 copper production forecast after a second severe winter storm caused further damage to infrastructure at its Caserones operation in Chile’s Atacama region.
The storm, which began on August 13, brought heavy rain, snowfall and strong winds across northern Chile. At Caserones, a transmission tower damaged during an earlier storm was hit again, resulting in another power outage on August 14.
The mine had already faced a power disruption between July 18 and July 30. Repair teams are now working to restore the damaged transmission system, with full power expected to return only by the end of the week. Meanwhile, backup generators are being used to keep essential facilities operating while repairs continue, said a company news release.
