  • Recycling, secondary production, and seabed mining are emerging as key future supply drivers.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The International Copper Study Group (ICSG) has released the latest edition of its biannual Directory of Copper Mines, Smelters and Refineries, offering a comprehensive overview of global copper production capacity through 2030.

The updated directory covers more than 1,400 facilities worldwide, detailing mine, smelter, and refinery capacities along with project developments, ownership changes, and long-term trends. It includes extensive data on capacity distribution by country, operational status, and processing type, supported by charts and tables.

According to the report, global copper mine capacity is projected to grow at an average annual rate of 3.6% between 2026 and 2030, driven by expansions and new projects such as Centinela, Lumwana, and Reko Diq. Smelter capacity is expected to increase by 2.6% annually, with China continuing to dominate global growth, accounting for nearly half of capacity additions through 2030.

Refinery capacity is forecast to rise by 2.2% annually, supported by both electrolytic and SX-EW technologies. The report also highlights rising investments in recycling and secondary production, as well as growing interest in seabed mining.

ICSG noted that while capacity trends indicate strong growth potential, actual production may vary due to operational and external challenges.
