Copper thefts on the rise at local work sites in Campbell County

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster):  The Campbell County Sheriff's Office says thefts targeting construction and utility work sites are becoming more common.

The latest copper theft case happened at a Verizon cell tower construction site on Anstey Road, where investigators say two masked suspects stole more than $4,700 worth of communications equipment and copper cable.

Deputies responded to the site on July 23 after a contractor reported an enclosed work trailer had been broken into overnight. Investigators say the suspects cut the trailer's locks, stole the equipment and then damaged a nearby trail camera before leaving.

Surveillance video captured two people wearing masks and gloves walking through the construction site during the early morning hours.

Captain Stuart Herndon with the Campbell County Sheriff's Office said the case is part of a larger trend deputies have been seeing across the county.

"The companies have put out more cameras, and we're doing everything we can to stop it," Herndon says. "We have caught several people doing this. It's not wise, obviously, for these people to go out and mess around electrical lines and these job sites, but they're very bold."

In response, the sheriff's office says it's working more closely with community members to deter thefts through increased surveillance and enforcement.

Herndon also says business owners and construction managers don't have to wait until a crime happens to ask for help. He's encouraging anyone with property concerns to call the authorities and request patrols.

Investigators are asking anyone who traveled on Anstey Road, Wards Road or Amy Road during the early morning hours of July 23 to review any surveillance footage they may have. They're also asking anyone who recognizes the two suspects to contact investigators.
