The Copper Chem, a Cloncurry based copper mining company, shut down their open cut copper mine this week after carrying out the last load of iron ore.
CANBERRA (Scrap Monster): The Mount Colin mine, located in the north-west part of Queensland, was a main supplier of the company’s processing plant. The mine provided the company with 450,000 tonnes of copper within the last 12 months.
Doug White, the Regional General Manager of the company, stated that the company had to cut off about 80 jobs in the mine after it had started to decline in the month of November. He also added that, as there is no active mining taking place in the mine, there was no chance of keeping the workers paid at MT Colin.
The company stated that, it had tried to help the people in the area by finding them jobs in other mines located in the region. The company’s processing plant is still collecting ore from the smaller satellite mines located in the area. White added that, the company plans to hire workers from the local area if the mine decided to start the production again.
He also added that, there is possibility that the company would hire specialized employees. The intention of the company is to encourage the employees to live in the town, which the company had done many times successfully in the past, because that’s it’s preference.
He stated that, until now, the company had no difficulties in acquiring process operators and also other level employees from the local region. The mine, Mt Colin is locked up at the present, but the company expects to reopen it by next year.
White added that, the company is planning to follow the same project further under ground, which looks quite promising. They are continuing to analyze the mine and there is a chance that the company will continue the mining underground. The matter depends on many number of factor, like the price of copper, which is the number one priority of the company at the present, and also the grade of the copper.
