West Cumbria Mining Decides To Reopen Coking Coal Project in Whitehaven

LONDON (Scrap Monster): West Cumbria Mining Company has planned to open a new coking coal project close to the former Haig Colliery in Whitehaven of West Cumbria.

The Whitehaven Haig Colliery was closed in 1986 losing about 3,500 jobs. They have investigated land in the site of around 200km^2.  The company believes that tons of coking coal of about 750 million tonnes can be extracted from the mine after the recommence.

The company is planning to invest about £14.7m for the first stage of the project. CEO Mark Kirkbride, West Cumbria Mining said that the UK is currently a substantial net importer of coking coal for industrial purpose and the majority of the coking coal is sourced from the USA and Australia.

Kirkbride added that it therefore makes an economic sense to source available coking coal on our shores if enough amounts of the coking coal can be accessed and mined economically. They will do discussions with the plan with local organizations and authorities. Initial plans which include onshore drilling and data reprocessing will be on the year end, which will provide more details about the coal present. The offshore drilling process will be carried out in 2015.
