The world's largest steel maker, Arcelor Mittal said during Tuesday that it was planning to shut down its coking plant in the Belgian city of Liege as it failed to find out a buyer for the plant.

BRUSSELS (Scrap Monster): The world’s largest steel maker, Arcelor Mittal said during Tuesday that it was planning to shut down its coking plant in the Belgian city of Liege as it failed to find out a buyer for the plant.

The company which produces around 6 percent of the world’s steel, had announced it’s to close the coking plant in early January 2013 as a part to restructure its Seraing site die to the decreasing demand of steel in European nations. But, it has put it open pending a possible sale, opening discussions with Colorado-based Oxbow Mining in the mid of 2013.

The company said on Tuesday that the two companies had failed to make an agreement and which forced them to take the decision to close the coking plant within the next four weeks. The coking plant employs about 240 workers.

At the site, the company also used to run two blast furnaces, which will continue to run five steel production lines for making automotive steel. This employs around 800 people. The company also has a steel plant in Ghent of northern Belgium.
