SEATTLE (Waste Advantage): Just in time for the holiday season: The city of Scottsdale is encouraging residents to cut down on waste. In the days leading up to Thanksgiving, city representatives made numerous posts on social media. “We need your help!” one begged. “Scottsdale is addressing the significant issue of food waste, which constitutes 40% of the United States’ annual waste of 66.2 million tons.”
This is one of Councilwoman Solange Whitehead’s pet peeves. “If food waste were a country, it would be the 3rd largest greenhouse gas emitter,” Whitehead said, in her newsletter emailed last week. “Put into context, food waste in U.S. landfills is generating roughly the emissions equivalent to 12 million cars!”
But how serious is Scottsdale about things like composting? Lisa McNeilly, the city’s Sustainability director who is putting together Scottsdale’s first sustainability plan, was asked if composting would be part of the plan. “We anticipate including actions to reduce food waste in the Waste section of the plan,” she said.
