City of Hillsdale, MI Considers Sale of Refuse Station to Modern Waste

SEATTLE (Waste Advantage): The city of Hillsdale is in the process of selling its refuse station to Modern Waste, which is currently contracted to operate the trash disposal and recycling center located on Carleton Road on the north end of Hillsdale. City Manager David Mackie said Modern Waste approached the city about the possibility of selling the transfer station earlier this year in order to expand their business. “City Council discussed the idea at one of their regularly scheduled meetings and expressed their support for the concept to move forward,” Mackie said. “This Mayor and Council have always been supportive of the private sector handling these types of services.”

The city recently rebuilt the transfer station building at a cost of $350,000 as the previous structure had exceeded its useful life, Mackie said.  The original transfer station was purchased in 1980 and operated by the city for four decades with contracts to both Republic Waste Services and recently Modern Waste.  Mackie said the selling price of the facility was $875,000 and that attorneys from both the city and Modern Waste are working on an agreement which will be brought back to the city council for approval.
