Cascades Inc. Cuts Ribbon on New Jersey Packaging Plant

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Quebec-based Cascades Inc. has announced that it will invest US$ 80 million to construct a new state-of-the-art containerboard packaging plant in New Jersey, USA.

The proposed facility will be located at an abandoned chemical plant on Turner Place off S. Washington Avenue near Stelton Road, Piscataway at an area of more than 400,000 square feet. It is expected to generate as many as 120 new jobs in the region. The plant will incorporate the most modern technology and equipment to deliver annual production capacity of 2.4 billion square feet. The construction of the plant is expected to commence soon. Cascades said the plant is expected to start production during the second quarter of 2018.

Piscataway Mayor Brian C. Wahler noted that construction of the new plant by Cascades is an important development for the town. It will not only result in getting an old site back on the tax rolls, but also provide tremendous boost to recycling numbers. The plant’s easy access to the freight train rail line is expected to lead to less number of trucks, thereby resulting in fewer emissions, Wahler added.

According to Mario Plourde, President and Chief Executive Officer of Cascades, the investment is part of the company’s strategic plan to modernize its assets and increase the integration rate between its primary production and conversion activities. The investment is a major step towards its efforts to consolidate its containerboard and packaging business in the northeastern US. Plourde also stated that the new plant will boost Cascade’s production capacity and help the company to better serve its customers.

Meantime, Charles Malo, President and Chief Operating Officer of Cascades Containerboard Packaging said that the site was chosen mainly on account of its proximity to major urban centers. Further, the site offers scope for future development, he noted.

The company thanked its partners and employees for making the project happen. It also extended its gratitude to the State of New Jersey, Middlesex County and the City of Piscataway.

It must be noted that Cascades Inc. had recently opened state-of-the-art paper products manufacturing facility at 52960 West Lane Road, Scappoose, Columbia County, Oregon. The facility, over an area of 284,000 square feet is expected to create around 60 new jobs.

Founded in 1964, Cascades produces, converts and markets packaging and tissue products that are composed mainly of recycled fibres. The Company employs close to 11,000 employees, who work in over 90 production units located in North America and Europe. From a manufacturer of primarily paper and cartonboard, the Corporation has emerged as the largest collector of recyclable materials in Canada, as well as one of the major converters of corrugated packaging products, tissue papers and specialty products in North America.
