Canada Is the Primary Source of U.S. Imported Steel Mill Products

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) released the details on U.S. imports of steel mill products by country of origin.

The largest source of import during the year-to-date as well as during the one-year period was Canada. The year-to-date imports from that country during the initial four-month period this year totalled 2.313 million net tons, more or less unchanged from the corresponding four-year period in 2021. Meantime, the imports of 6.970 million net tons of steel mill products during May 2021 to April 2022 was up significantly by 24.7%, compared with 5,588 million net tons during May 2020 to April 2021.

The year-to-date imports from Mexico surged higher by 42.5% from 1.371 million net tons to 1.953 million net tons. The imports during the period from May 2021 to April 2022 recorded substantial surge by 58.3% over the year-ago period. Meantime, the imports from Brazil dipped by 35.5% during the year-to-date period, while it was up by 8% during the 12-month period, AISI noted.

The current three-months rolling average of U.S. imports of finished steel mill products from Canada, compared with prior three-months, edged higher by 2.6%. The three-months rolling average from Mexico dipped by 4.1%, whereas that from South Korea surged by 26.6%.
