SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): British Steel announced that it will hold a series of public consultations over previously declared plans to shut its blast furnaces. The company plans to replace two of its blast furnaces- one at Scunthorpe and one at Teesside, with electric arc furnaces.
According to company management, the £1.25bn proposal will help the company produce net zero steel for several decades to come, but pledged to listen to the public’s opinion. The plans, if implemented, is feared to lead to loss of around 1,500-2,000 jobs, mainly in Scunthorpe.

The steelmaker noted that it has already started preliminary talks with unions. It offered all necessary support to affected workers. It has also agreed to the demand by unions to have the plan reviewed by a specialist. Meantime, Community- one among the unions that represent steelworkers at the plant has warned the company that it would not accept compulsory redundancies.
British Steel will consult with the people in the communities surrounding the plant about the proposal. They would be provided opportunity to have a detailed view of the plan and to clarify their queries with regards to the implementation of the plan. Any action forward will be after considering the feedback from consultations, it added.
