BIR Position Paper Spotlights Benefits of Green Steel Production

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): A new position paper on green steel was released by the Bureau of International Recycling (BIR). In order to facilitate the shift to a decarbonized steel industry, it advocates for an equitable and scientific approach to steelmaking.

Current methods run the risk of classifying higher-emission steel—which is frequently created from virgin raw materials—as green, the trade group cautioned. They ignore steel produced using electric arc furnace (EAF) technology and recycled material. These approaches lead to the misallocation of incentives and public procurement funds away from truly low-carbon production paths, in addition to reducing transparency.

According to the position paper, definitions of green steel should take into account all lifecycle emissions rather than just the production process or the source of the feedstock utilized. It also emphasized the need for steel used in infrastructure, transportation, and public building projects to have a minimum amount of recycled content.

It demanded legislative measures to guarantee that green steel requirements are grounded in quantifiable, real emissions. Additionally, it called for the removal of export limitations on recycled steel, claiming that they would impede the global decarbonization process.

According to Susie Burrage OBE, President of BIR, steel produced using recycled materials in electric arc furnaces can reduce emissions by over 74% when compared to the conventional blast furnace production method.
