Bio Pappel Announces Production Restart at Washington Paper Mill

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The Mexico-based Bio Pappel’s U.S. subsidiary announced that it plans to begin production at the Port Angeles, Washington paper mill, which has been idle for almost eighteen months. McKinley Paper Co. has scheduled startup of production at the North Pacific mill by as early as September 2019.

The facility was previously owned by Nippon Paper Industries USA, which used to produce telephone directory paper and news print. On account of diminishing demand for its products, the company had decided to idle the mill. The idled facility was later sold to McKinley in March 2017 for a sum of $20.6 million.

According to press release issued by McKinley last week, the company has decided to reopen the mill to produce containerboard from recycled materials. It has decided to install state-of-the-art machinery and equipment at the plant, capable to produce 250,000 tons of containerboard per year, thereby doubling its domestic capacity. In addition, the company has decided to invest on maritime infrastructure, aimed at enhancing the input and output freight options and minimizing costs.

In addition to the 25 employees currently maintaining the Port Angeles plant, the company plans to recruit 125 people, upon the startup of operations at the plant next fall. Also, McKinley plans to deploy a corrugated box system to produce more value-added paper products through additional investments and strategic alliances.
