Barrick Gold Goes Ahead with Expansion Project at Pueblo Viejo Gold Mine

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Barrick Gold Corporation announced that the Dominican Republic has completed a review of the location for a new tailings storage facility for its Pueblo Viejo gold mine expansion project. The proposed $1.4 billion project is expected to extend the production of the mine beyond 2040 and support production to over 80,000 ounces per year.

The country’s government has identified a select number of alternatives for further assessment. In addition, the company has engaged a multi-disciplinary team of subject experts from various independent consulting companies. After several screening phases, potentially feasible sites have been identified for further evaluation.

The two separate assessments identified four alternative sites, out of which two sites located in the Sanchez Ramirez Province have been put forward for further investigation.

Mark Bristow, President and CEO, Barrick Gold said that the final location and construction of the facility would be subject to the completion of the Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA), the results of which would be submitted to the government for evaluation and final decision. The company will adhere to international global standards in terms of design, construction, operation and closure of tailings facility.
