ArcelorMittal To Invest in Port-Cartier Pellet Plant

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): ArcelorMittal Mining Canada, in association with the government of Canada announced investment of CAD$205 million in its Port-Cartier pellet production facility. The investment will convert its entire 10 million tonne annual pellet production to DRI pellets by the end of 2025.

The investment will convert the plant to be one among the world’s largest producers of DRI pellets. The project comprises of implementation of a floatation system that will boost production of very-high quality pellet. The government of Quebec will contribute approximately CAD$80 million by way of an electricity rebate.

The investment will significantly reduce energy required during the pelletising process. The project will reduce annual carbon dioxide emissions at the Port-Cartier pellet plant by approximately 200,000 tonnes. The construction phase of the project will create around 250 jobs. The construction is expected to begin by mid-2023 and scheduled for end-2025 completion.

Aditya Mittal, CEO, ArcelorMittal noted that the project has a key role to play in its efforts to reduce the Group’s carbon emissions intensity by 25% by 2030 and reach its long-term goal of net-zero emissions by 2050. This is the first significant decarbonisation project announced in its mining business, he added.
