SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): ArcelorMittal, the second-largest steel manufacturer in the world, announced plans to construct a state-of-the-art steel production facility in Calvert, Alabama. Production is planned to start in 2027, while building of the facility is expected to start in the second part of this year. Approximately 1,300 jobs will be created during the project's building phase, and over 200 permanent employment will be created during its operation, greatly boosting Alabama's economy.
Based on the product mix, the new plant, which will be fully owned by ArcelorMittal, can manufacture up to 150,000 metric tons of non-grain-oriented electric steel (NOES) annually. The facility will be crucial to increasing domestic NOES production in the United States and lowering the nation's dependency on electrical steel imports. Additionally, it will open the door for advancements in renewable energy and electric motor technologies.
John Brett, CEO, ArcelorMittal North America appreciated the support received for the project. He recognized Governor Kay Ivey, Secretary of Commerce Ellen McNair, Mobile County Commission and the Mobile Chamber for their assistance.
