ArcelorMittal Started Operations of Trial Carbon Capture Unit

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): ArcelorMittal, along with its partners, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) and BHP, in collaboration with Mitsubishi Development Pty Ltd has started operations at a pilot carbon capture unit on blast furnace at ArcelorMittal Gent, Belgium.

The full-scale project will be able to capture a sizeable portion of the Gent site emissions. The pilot carbon capture unit will run for a period of one or two years on a test basis, in order to assess the feasibility of progressing to a full-scale deployment. It must be noted that the works on assembling and commissioning of the trial unit had commenced in the month of January this year.

The test will be initially carried out with blast furnace off-gases, and off-gases from the hot strip mill reheating furnace, both of which poses technical challenges in implementation. The technology has the potential to capture other important steelmaking gases such as reformer flue gas from a DRI plant. The four parties had started collaborating on a multi-year trial of the carbon capture technology in October 2022.

The trial, which will be implemented in two phases, will help in developing technology that may significantly lower carbon dioxide emissions during steelmaking process.
