ArcelorMittal, IIT Collaborate to Establish Asia’s First Hyperloop Facility

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): ArcelorMittal announced that it has entered into a partnership with Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) to establish what would be the first hyperloop facility in Asia. The collaboration with student team and start-up will focus on developing cost-effective hyperloop technologies for passenger as well as cargo transportation needs.

The foundational steel materials required for the test track under construction at the IIT campus in the outskirts of the city will be provided by ArcelorMittal and AM/NS India. The collaboration, with the support of Ministry of Railways, aims to develop and commercialize Hyperloop technologies for high-speed, affordable, reliable and sustainable transportation solutions.

The nearly 400-metre vacuum tube at the site has been fabricated using approximately 400 tonnes of steel supplied by the steelmaker. The test facility is expected to be operational by the end of initial quarter this year.

Commenting on the partnership, Pinakin Chaubal, Chief Technology Officer, ArcelorMittal noted that it is a hugely exciting project to be a part of. It demonstrates that steel would have an important role to play in Hyperloop- the high-speed transportation system of the future.
