SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Luxembourg-based leading steelmaker ArcelorMittal today confirmed that it has decided to halt its steelmaking operations at the Kryvyi Rih plant in Ukraine. The decision is considered as part of the company’s efforts to ensure safety and security of its employees and assets in the war-hit country.
The company has been closely evaluating the situation on a regular basis since the commencement of tensions between the neighbouring countries of Russia and Ukraine. Previously, it had reduced the operating capacity at the plant to a technical minimum level. Lately, the plant has been operating at approximately one-third of its actual production capacity.

According to company press release, the company has commenced the process to idle all the blast furnaces at the steelmaking facility from today onwards. It will take nearly seven to ten days for safely idling all the furnaces. It expressed solidarity with the Ukrainian population and noted that it is deeply concerned about the situation in the country and the threat posed by the war to its employees and assets.
It must be noted that blast furnace No.9 at ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih has been shut down temporarily on account of raw material shortage.
