ArcelorMittal Commited to Elevate Blast Furnace Scrap Consumption

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Leading integrated steelmaker ArcelorMittal announced publication of its second group climate action report. The company had earlier published its first report in May 2019.

The company, in its new report, announced a 2030 global carbon emissions intensity reduction target of 25%. Also, it has boosted its European 2030 carbon emissions intensity target from previously announced 30% to 35%. ArcelorMittal aims to achieve net zero emissions target by 2050.

ArcelorMittal anticipates transition from coal to natural gas as a forerunner to green hydrogen DRI. It expects more radical energy transformation from fossil fuel-based energy to low carbon emissions forms of energy. Apart from increasing usage of scrap in EAFs, the company will boost its use in blast furnace steelmaking. The other proposals in the report include sourcing of clean electricity and launching of new projects to offset residual emissions.

The company expects capital expenditure of nearly C$10 billion, in order to achieve the above reduction targets. Out of this, around 35% will be invested by 2025, with the balance during the remaining period of the decade.

The new targets are aligned with the company’s net zero 2050 ambition, noted Aditya Mittal, CEO, ArcelorMittal.
