The strike follows rejection of the company’s “final and comprehensive†offer, against which approximately 97-99% workers voted.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): ArcelorMittal Canada- the Canadian subsidiary of Luxembourg-based integrated steelmaker ArcelorMittal announced that it has reached a tentative deal with striking United Steelworkers in Quebec region. The deal was reached on the terms of a potential new collective agreement. However, the terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Nearly 2,500 ArcelorMittal workers, represented by five locals of the United Steelworkers and affiliated with the Quebec Federation of Labour (QFL), have been on strike since May 10. The striking workers belong to the company’s mines, port facilities, rail lines and offices in northeastern Quebec. The strike follows rejection of the company’s “final and comprehensive” offer, against which approximately 97-99% workers voted.
The deal was reached during its last round of negotiations, in the presence of a mediator appointed by Federal Labour Ministry. The approval of the new deal will lead to a new collective agreement which will be valid for a period of four years.
Mapi Mobwano, ArcelorMittal Mining Canada President and CEO said that the company is pleased with the outcome, which is the result of efforts of both parties as well as that of the conciliator. The agreement was also welcomed by Labour Minister Jean Boulet.
