According to AISI study, 20% of the market was made up of imported finished steel in April of this year.

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The latest figures available from the U.S. Census Bureau shows that in April of this year, a total of 2.073 million net tons of steel were imported. This represents a noteworthy 17.1% decline in imports compared to the previous month. Also, 1.607 million net tons of finished steel were imported during the month, down by 11.8% from March 2025.
Tin plates were the finished steel product with the largest increase in import volumes, with import volumes up by over 43% compared to March of this year. Additionally, oil country goods imports rose 26% month over month, a significant rise. The top offshore suppliers during the month were Canada, Brazil, South Korea, Mexico, and Germany.
The 12-month period from May 2024 to April 2025 saw a 4.4% decrease in overall steel imports and a 5.1% reduction in completed steel imports year over year.
In April of this year, 20% of the market was composed of imported finished steel, according the AISI study.
Compared to the previous 12-month period, imports of tin plates and wire rods increased significantly during the 12-month period from May 2024 to April 2025. These products had increases in imports of 73% and 14%, respectively. Sheet and strip imports, along with all other metallic-coated and line-pipe imports, increased by 14% apiece.
