AISI Highlighted Sustainability Benefits of U.S. Steel Industry

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) highlighted the sustainability benefits of American steel industry.

In a statement in response to Earth Day, Kevin Dempsey, president and CEO, AISI noted that the country’s steel industry is one among the cleanest in the entire world. The significant portion of its steel is produced from EAFs using scrap, which results in lower carbon emissions. The integrated steel mills in the country are almost entirely fed by domestically-sourced iron ore pellets, which in turn leads to lower carbon dioxide emissions as well as nitrogen oxide and sulfur oxide particulate matter. In addition, these mills also use huge quantities of natural gas.

The U.S. steel industry represents less than 2% of the total carbon dioxide emissions by the global steel industry. Despite this, the industry is keen on pursuing latest advancements to further reduce emissions, including use of DRI and HBI, which use natural gas as a reductant. Furthermore, the use of steel is found to help customer sectors to reduce their GHG emissions, AISI noted.

AISI congratulated President Biden on his leadership in convening the climate summit. Meantime, it warned of high carbon emissions by Chinese steelmaking industry.
