SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The monthly data published by the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) suggests that steel shipments during the month of December last year surged higher when compared with the same month a year ago. However, the shipments recorded decline over the prior month.

According to AISI data, the steel mills shipped 7.083 million net tons in December 2023. This is modestly higher by 2.6% upon comparison with the shipments of 6.902 million net tons in the same month a year before. On the contrary, the shipments during the month witnessed modest decline by 1.3% from the previous month. It must be noted that the shipments had totalled 7.175 million net tons in November last year.
The cumulative shipments by U.S. domestic steel mills totalled 89.338 million net tons during the full year 2023. This is marginally down by 0.1% when matched with the corresponding period a year before. The steel shipments by these mills had totalled 89.469 million net tons during January to December in 2022.
The report provides year-on-year comparison of shipment volumes of various steel products during the entire year 2023. The shipments of corrosion-resistant sheet during this period soared by nearly 1% over the previous year. The shipments of cold rolled sheet were up by 4%. Meantime, hot rolled sheet shipments increased the most, registering surge by 14%, upon comparison with 2022, AISI noted.
