AISI Commends Supreme Court Decision to Reject Challenges to Steel Import Tariffs

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) applauded the decision by the U.S. Supreme Court to reject importer challenges to steel import tariffs imposed by the Trump administration.

In a statement issued yesterday, Thomas J. Gibson, president and CEO, AISI said that it is pleased that the topmost court has affirmed the previous decisions by the Court of International Trade and Court of Appeals that the challenges to Section 232 statute is without merit. The Supreme Court decision reaffirms that the Congress had acted within its constitutional authority, authorizing the President to take action to curb imports that tend to threaten the country’s national security, he added.

The highest court had declined to hear the challenge filed by the American Institute for International Steel (AIIS), which claimed that the tariffs are in violation of the U.S. constitution. The petition was filed further to the decision by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit to uphold the tariffs. The lawsuit was filed by AIIS along with two of its members in June 2018.

The Trump administration had imposed 25% import tariff on steel products and 10% tariff on aluminum imports.
