SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) announced Benjamin W. Schafer, Ph.D., P.E., the Willard and Lillian Hackerman Professor of Civil and Systems Engineering at Johns Hopkins University as the proud winner of the 2022 Market Development Industry Leadership Award. The award was presented by Kevin Dempsey, president and CEO of AISI.
Dr. Schafer’s post-doctoral work at Cornell University led to the development of Direct Strength Method (DSM), which in turn provided a new and powerful method for the design of cold-formed steel members with more complex cross-sections than allowed by traditional methods. His vision led to the development of the code-recognized cold-formed steel seismic force-resisting systems.
Dempsey noted that the leadership and commitment of Dr. Ben Schafer has played a key role in the success of AISI’s standards development activities. His contributions have enabled transformative changes in the building construction industry, he added.
The Market Development Industry Leadership Award by the Institute recognizes individuals for their significant contributions towards advancing the competitive use of steel in the marketplace.
