NEW DELHI(Scrap Monster): Medical Waste management is expected to be a formidable problem in India by 2020, especially in Gurgaon, which is expected to be a hub for quality healthcare services, according to The Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM).
Robust systems has to be implemented immediately in the treatment of medical wastes as most of the hospitals, medical centres, primary health centres does not have such facilities. About 15 lakh tonnes of healthcare waste is generated each year in the country.
According to the study'Quality and Safety in Healthcare' by ASSOCHAM, The country's healthcare is expected to have a turn over of Rs3.75 lakh crore this financial year and double in volume in next five years.
Education and healthcare will be given primary focus for 12th five year plan. Moreover, increased market forces, medical tourism, insurance and the booming corporate sector have compelled greater demand for quality healthcare services.
D S Rawat,ASSOCHAM secretary general, said,"A holistic approach to deal with medical waste management should include a clear delineation of responsibilities, occupational health and safety programmes, waste minimisation and segregation, development and adoption of safe and environmentally sound technologies, and capacity building."
He added that government should take initiative to improve infrastructure and ensure stringent safety procedures to provide adequate healthcare services to all Indians which in turn will fuel economic growth.
