Japan's MoF releases waste and scrap export statistics for 2016

TOKYO (Scrap Monster): The Japanese Ministry of Finance (MoF) has published the country’s waste and scrap export statistics for the month of December last year.

According to data, Japan exported 29,297 metric tons (MT) of ordinary steel scrap during Dec ’16. The largest importer was the USA with 27,004 MT, accounting for over 92% of the total exports of ordinary steel scrap by Japan during the month. The other leading importers of ordinary steel scrap from Japan during the month were South Korea (2,046 MT), Italy (120 MT), Panama (71 MT) and Liberia (32 MT). The price of overall exports of ordinary steel scrap averaged at $210.39 per MT.

The cumulative exports of ordinary steel scrap during the whole year 2016 totaled 58,062 metric tons. The export prices averaged at $159.68 per MT during the year. USA was the key importer with exports from Japan totaling 27,057 metric tons. The other primary destinations of Japanese ordinary steel scrap exports were South Korea (26,440 MT), Taiwan (3,426 MT) and Panama (230 MT).

The country’s exports of waste and scrap of Stainless Steel totaled 7,309 metric tons in Dec ’16. The exports averaged at $1,277.57 per MT. South Korea accounted for over 50% of the total stainless steel scrap exports by Japan during the month. The imports by South Korea totaled 3,757 metric tons, followed by Taiwan (1,593 MT), the USA (1,011 MT), Thailand (301 MT) and Indonesia (212 MT). The cumulative exports during the entire year 2016 totaled 100,911 metric tons. The key offshore countries that constituted the exports of waste and scrap stainless steel during the year were South Korea (49,354 MT), Taiwan (21,946 MT), the USA (13,481 MT), Hong Kong (3,130 MT) and Indonesia (2,849 MT).

As per statistics, Japan exported 939 metric tons (MT) of waste and scrap of other alloy steel during December last year. The largest importer was South Korea with 397 MT. The other leading importers during the month were Philippines (123 MT), Taiwan (85 MT), Czech Republic (82 MT) and Malaysia (79 MT). The price of overall Dec ’16 exports averaged at $2,905.48 per MT.

The cumulative exports of waste and scrap of other alloy steel during the whole year 2016 totaled 13,701 metric tons. The export prices averaged at $2,079.73 per MT during this period. South Korea was the key importer with exports from Japan totaling 6,132 metric tons. The other primary destinations of export were Philippines (1,283 MT), Thailand (1,148 MT), the USA(1,122 MT), Malaysia (828 MT) and Czech Republic (789 MT).

Japan’s exports of waste and scrap of cast iron totaled 189 metric tons in Dec ’16. The export prices averaged at $960.14 per MT. South Korea was the key importer during the month. The country’s exports of Turnings and Stampings totaled 149 metric tons during December last year at an average price of $474.20. China accounted for major share of the total exports by Japan during the month. The imports by China totaled 145 metric tons, followed South Korea with 4 MT.

The only importer of waste and scrap of tinned heavy melting scrap from Japan during 2016 was Malaysia. The exports totaled 155 MT at an average price of $2,778.47 per metric ton. There were no exports recorded during the month of December last year.
