RIO DE JANEIRO(Scrap Monster): Power technology group ABB has been awarded $140mn contract by Vale, to automate the Carajás Serra Sul S11D project in Brazil. The $8bn project includes an iron ore mine and a processing plant.
An automation and electrical equipment will be provided by ABB under the agreement. Also a shiftable conveyor belts for transportation of iron ore will be transported from the mine to the processing plant.
The belts will eliminate the need of trucks, saving on operating costs and carbon emissions on a large scale when it is implemented.
The project will allow Vale to increase production by approximately 90 million tons, while substantially reducing emissions and improving operational efficiency and process safety, says ABB process automation division head Veli-Matti Reinikkala.
The mine project is expected to deliver in 2016 by Vale, after the implementation license is issued in 2013.
