Akron is Greenstar's newest single stream recycling facility. The 196,000 square foot facility was opened in June, 2012 and has the capacity to process 15,000 tons of material each month. Each year, Greenstar Akron's single stream recycling will save 850,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (MTCO2E). This is equivalent to removing 185,000 cars from local roads each year.Akron is poised for growth and Greenstar expects recycling rates to increase with the availability of single stream for businesses, residential subdivisions and municipalities throughout central and northeast Ohio.
Recycling in Ohio
Greenstar has two material recovery facilities in Ohio that service municipalities, businesses, and residential recyclers across Ohio and Pennsylvania. In the community, Greenstar has partnered with local organizations such as Association of Ohio Recyclers and the Carton Council to improve recycling offerings in Ohio.

Greenstar Akron processes recyclables for the City of Akron, City of Cleveland, and other communities and businesses throughout central and northeast Ohio. Our single stream sorting system allows recyclers to place all recyclables into one bin. Single stream decreases the cost of collection and increases the convenience of recycling, typically resulting in increased volume.

Developing new markets, products and applications for recovered commodities is essential to the success of recycling. Recovering the materials is only half the job—putting them to use as a feedstock for another product completes the loop.
We are committed to expanding and upgrading the end-use of recyclables. As an example, Greenstar operates a world class glass upgrading plant and small glass bead manufacturing plant from its operations in Pennsylvania. The majority of the glass beads are sold to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation to provide reflectivity for highway markings within the State of Pennsylvania.
Our new recycling facility in Akron, OH will include an innovative processing technology that will convert recovered plastic into synthetic crude oil. These services will be provided by local company Vadxx Energy, LLC through a joint venture with Greenstar. The companies will work together with the City of Akron to provide a domestic fuel and benefit the environment by repurposing recovered plastic products. This project will provide additional jobs and visitors to Akron while supporting an existing, local business.

Energy Conservation: Recycling saves energy by reducing the need to process new material, which usually requires more energy than the recycling process. Recycling aluminum saves 92% of the energy required to make the material from scratch.
Pollution Reduction: Products made using recycled rather than raw materials use significantly less energy, which translates into less burning of fossil fuels such as coal, oil and natural gas. When burned, these fuels release pollutants, such as sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxide, and carbon monoxide.
Land Conservation: Recycling minimizes the materials going to the landfill, thereby slowing the growth of landfills and preserving our land.
