St. Lawrence County Delays Private Participation in Waste Hauling Services

Some debate has risen over whether or not savings will be found from the changeover.

SEATTLE (Waste Advantage): St. Lawrence County legislators have tabled a plan to solicit bids for hauling waste from the county transfer stations to the landfill in Jefferson County.

Over the past year St. Lawrence County has been looking to find savings in its waste and recycling services. The most recent proposal was to hire a contractor to take over hauling.

At a recent finance committee meeting the legislators agreed to solicit bids to see if a private hauler could provide savings to the county, rather than relying on the Solid Waste Department to haul garbage to the landfill.

On Monday though, legislators decided to table the plan until January. Some debate has risen over whether or not savings will be found from the changeover.

The county has four transfer stations located in Lisbon, Gouverneur, Star Lake and Massena.

The landfill in is located in Rodman and is owned by the Development Authority of the North Country.
