Old Landfill in Wisconsin Gets New Life

SEATTLE (Waste 360): An old landfill in Oshkosh, Wis., has been given a new life.

The Winnebago County Solid Waste Department just celebrated the opening of a new conservation park where the Snell Road Landfill used to be. The dump had been closed for decades, and the idea to create a park at that site had been in the works for the past four years.

A fence separates a mound of old buried garbage from the 25-acre park, which now includes hiking and biking trails and two ponds, where visitors can watch nature or fish from an accessible pier made of recycled plastic.

The Winnebago County Parks Department will operate and maintain the site.

In the shadow of a mound of old buried garbage, the Winnebago County Solid Waste Department celebrated something new.

"Landfilling was complete in '89, and then the final cover was installed in 1991. So that started the long-term care period. And so it really has just kind of sat idle. We're just taking care of it, and it created a great opportunity to create a park," said John Rabe, Winnebago County Solid Waste Director.
