Kalamazoo, Mich., Faces Recycling Contamination Challenges

The city of Kalamazoo is reminding citizens to throw only approved recyclable materials into recycling bins, after an entire load of materials could not be recycled due to contamination.

SEATTLE (Waste 360): As recycling volumes increase, Kalamazoo, Mich., reminds residents to only recycle approved materials. The city recently received more than 2 tons of material that was found to be contaminated. The contaminated material included items like yard waste, trash bags and household trash, according to MLive.com.

The city of Kalamazoo is reminding citizens to throw only approved recyclable materials into recycling bins, after an entire load of materials could not be recycled due to contamination.

The city of Kalamazoo was notified on Tuesday, April 14, that an entire load of recyclables, 2.39 tons of material, was found to be contaminated and could not be recycled. The contamination included items including yard waste, tires, trash bags, household trash and many other non-recyclable items, the city said.
