City of Savannah, GA Crews Mobilize to Remove 300 Tons of Parade Trash

On Saturday, as revelers gradually spilled out of Lafeyette Square, a small convoy of large refuse trucks pulled onto Charlton Lane.

SEATTLE (Waste Advantage): Renee Higgins’ real work began just as the end of the Savannah St. Patrick’s Day Parade passed Taylor Square. Higgins and other City of Savannah employees swooped in as parade-goers dismantled tents folded up tables – or just kept on partying. “We get going with the clean-up just as soon as the parade is over,” Higgins said as she squeezed the trigger of her litter picker then deposited the remains of a napkin into an oversized paper bag. “That lets us get jumpstarted.”

Higgins is one of about 200 Savannah Sanitation Department workers who, by the time their post-parade assignments are completed, will have collected about 300 tons of trash left behind in squares and on streets near the parade route, said city spokesman Joshua Peacock.

That includes recyclables placed in – and sometimes overflowing from – designated bins.  On Saturday, as revelers gradually spilled out of Lafeyette Square, a small convoy of large refuse trucks pulled onto Charlton Lane.
