SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The U.S. exports of nickel waste and scrap registered substantial decline during the first four months of the current year. The most recent trade data published by the U.S. Census Bureau indicates that the exports declined by over 7% during this period, when compared with the prior year. The Jan-Apr ’20 exports were valued at $37.46 million as compared with $40.33 million a year before.

In the first four months of 2020, the top trade partner was Canada. The nickel scrap exports from the U.S. to Canada totalled $19.39 million. The country accounted for nearly 52% of all U.S. shipments. The exports to that country witnessed huge decline by almost 29% year-on-year. The second largest destination of exports was the UK, whose imports from the U.S. totalled $4.81 million. In third place was Japan with imports of $4.06 million. The other key export destinations were Australia ($3.22 million) and Germany ($1.61 million).
Over 88% of the U.S. shipments of nickel waste and scrap in Jan-Apr ’20 were to the above top five foreign markets.
Meantime, the U.S. imports of nickel scrap recorded a year-on-year dip by 3.49% until April this year. The imports totalled $92.39 million. The top five sources of import were the UK ($26.34 million), Canada ($10.86 million), Russia ($8.73 million), Mexico ($8.34 million) and Japan ($7.94 million).
