UKRI To Invest in Cutting-Edge Plastics Recycling Systems

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Swindon, U.K.-based UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) announced investment of approximately 20 million pounds in cutting-edge recycling systems in the UK. The proposed investment in four recycling plants across the country is expected to boost the available recycling capacity and expand the range of recycled plastics.

In the first project, as part of the investment, Veolia will collaborate with Unilever, Charpak Ltd. and HSSMI to develop the region’s first dual polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottle and tray recycling facility. The facility will recycle 100% of clear rigid PET in a closed-loop system.

The second project to receive the funding is the plant to be set up by ReNew ELP. The plant, to be centred on a Catalytic Hydrothermal Reactor (Cat-HTR), will be set up at Wilton, Teesside. The plant would be capable of converting nearly 20,000 tons per year of end-of-life plastic into chemicals and oils at an initial stage.

The UKRI fund will also assist Recycling Technologies in establishing a chemical recycling plant that uses thermal cracking to recycle a wide range of plastic waste. The proposed plant will have a processing capacity of up to 7,000 tons of hard-to-recycle mixed plastic scrap every year.

In addition, the funding will help Poseidon Plastics to commercialize its enhanced recycling technology by constructing a 15,000-ton-per-year PET recycling facility.
