Tata Steel Plant Announced Safe Demolition of Old Chimney

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Tata Steel announced successful demolition of its 110-metre high old chimney at its Jamshedpur plant. The demolition was executed using a controlled implosion method, which lasted only for 11 seconds. The 27-year old chimney belonged to battery No.5 of the plant.

The contract for demolition of the chimney at the coke plant in Jamshedpur works was carried out by South Africa-headquartered Edifice Engineering India, in cooperation with J Demolition Company. It was executed as planned, in a safe and environment-friendly manner. The chimney, built in 1995, fell exactly in the area demarcated for the fall, with zero degree deviation.

The area was evacuated before the demolition and dust was controlled using ‘water curtains’. There were sophisticated mechanisms, employing latest technologies, to absorb vibration and to prevent debris from getting scattered. As a rehearsal, the 2-metre long repair shop of the coke plant was demolished.

According to Avneesh Gupta, Vice President, Tata Steel, it cost the company around INR 2 crore for the demolition. The company plans to demolish the coal tower as well as the battery No.6 chimney, as part of its efforts to replace all the old plants with new ones.
