State Police Charge Two in Alleged Scrap Metal Scam

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster):  State police have filed criminal charges against a Reynoldsville man and a DuBois woman for their alleged involvement in a scrap metal scam at a local auto salvage business, where they are accused of falsifying weigh slips for payment.

Court documents indicate that DuBois-based Pennsylvania State Police filed criminal charges against 43-year-old Dustin Karl Wolfe, of Reynoldsville, and 30-year-old Kayleigh Mae Huzsek, of DuBois, on May 14, 2024, in Magisterial District Judge David B. Inzana’s office.

According to the criminal complaint, on December 27, 2023, at 2:46 p.m., State Trooper Jason Perry was contacted by an auto salvage business about a theft of scrap metal.

During a review of the business’ camera footage, they discovered an employee, Wolfe, was writing out false weigh slips and providing them to Huzsek to receive payment, states the complaint.

The December 9 video depicts three people, including Wolfe and Huzsek, in the company’s weighing room. The third person grabbed copper from a barrel already in the room and placed it on the scale to be weighed. Wolfe, seeing this, wrote out a slip and provided it to Huzsek to be paid. The amount was $110.25, though the transaction was voided before funds could be transferred, the complaint indicates.

Huzsek requested another check be issued, but the business declined to do so, according to the complaint.

Another video taken on November 15, 2023, depicted Huzsek and Wolfe in the weigh room. Wolfe placed items that Huzsek brought in onto the scale, wrote a slip, and provided it to Huzsek for payment. The items on the scale did not match the items on the slip, nor were the weights correct. The transaction went through before the business caught the theft. The amount stolen was $199.98, the complaint says.

According to court records, Wolfe is facing a charge of theft of secondary metal, while Huzsek faces a charge of conspiracy of theft of secondary metal. Each charge is a second-degree misdemeanor.

A preliminary hearing for Huzsek is set for June 13, at 10:30 a.m. and Wolfe’s hearing is scheduled for 10:45 a.m. in Judge Inzana’s courtroom.
