Smurfit Kappa Declares Major Expansion to Mold Corrugated Packaging Facility

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): European packaging major Smurfit Kappa announced major investment at its corrugated packaging facility on Mold Business Park, Mold, Flintshire. The proposed investment will expand the capacity by over 80% and will lead to significant business growth over the next five years.

According to company press release, the investment is aimed at elevating the Mold plant as the company’s largest production facility in the entire UK region. The expansion by more than 14,000 square metres will secure more than 170 existing jobs. In addition, it will lead to creation of around 50 new jobs.

The documents are already being submitted to Flintshire Council. Currently, comments are being invited on the application through local authority’s website. A decision on the application is due to be taken by planning officers by mid-September.

Also, it supports large number of local community projects, aimed at uplifting local communities. The company has formulated investment plan to expand capacity as business growth has plateaued within the existing constructed capacity, it said.

Meantime, the company announced that it has been listed on FTSE4Good Index for the sixth consecutive year, in recognition of its sustainability efforts. This follows rigorous assessment of Smurfit Kappa facilities in accordance with FTSE4Good criteria.
