In a recent survey from Two Sides, 62% of consumers prefer paper over plastic when it comes to caring about the environment.

SEATTLE (Waste 360): While the use of paper in packaging solutions has been on the decline since the early 2000s, consumer sentiment is driving demand for the biodegradable product.

In a recent survey from Two Sides, 62% of consumers prefer paper over plastic when it comes to caring about the environment. Advantages cited include, "paper as a substrate for flexible packaging if it does not increase food waste and/or compromise other properties essential to the packaged product." As a result, food manufacturers have been shifting to paper packaging.

This has caused plastic manufacturers to ramp up efforts on sustainable solutions. Legislative measures are beginning to reflect these new initiatives, particularly in Europe where packaging is a main component of a new Green Deal. Still, many directives employed by the European Union (EU) thus far have favored plastics.
