Nucor Announces Big Investment in Cutting-Edge Chrome Plating Technology

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Charlotte, North Carolina-headquartered Nucor Corporation has purchased minority stake in Trion Coatings, LLC, which will enable the company to develop and commercialize Trion’s state-of-the-art chrome plating technology. As part of the agreement, Nucor will construct a pilot facility at its St. Joe, Indiana facility in order to boost the development and commercialization of the environment-friendly technology.

John Ferriola, Chairman, CEO & President of Nucor Corporation stated that the company is excited to invest in the cutting-edge technology. The investment will result in working together with Trion Coatings and the University of Notre Dame to advance the technology to commercial level. The investment is part of Nucor’s strategy to increase the sustainability of its business and reduce the impact on environment, Ferriola added.

The new plating solution developed by Trion Coatings offers an environment-friendly alternative to the prevailing hexavalent chromium (Cr6) with trivalent chromium (Cr3) and makes use of an ionic liquid chemistry developed by its staff scientists. The patent-pending alternative solution puts forward overall higher performance, utmost health and safety when compared with the traditional chrome plating process. The revolutionary chrome coating technology is set to bring in radical changes to steel finishing.

Nucor Corp. had recently declared the highest second quarter earnings in its history, capitalizing on the significant investments made by it over the past decade. This new investment too is expected to drive Nucor’s operational excellence in a big way.
