SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Nordic Paper announced that its Backhammar, Sweden Pulp and Paper mill is ready to start operations next week, after annual stoppage for maintenance activities. The start-up was delayed due to unforeseen events which led to damage of floor drain, resulting in leakage out to Visman creek.
The company press release stated that pulp production at the mill is scheduled to start in the beginning of next week. The paper production will follow a ramp up phase of the pulp production, it noted. According to Marie Stenquist, director of Corporate Communications, Nordic Paper, the water in the Visman creek is currently showing normal levels of oxygen, thanks to the all-out efforts undertaken by the company during the past one week.
Nordic’s Backhammar mill had reported certain problems at the scheduled start-up. The damaged floor drain for clean water resulted in large quantities of fresh water entering to the factory system. This water, mixed with soap had flown to the internal treatment plant and thereafter to the creek Visman. This resulted in extremely low levels of oxygen in water along with discoloration.
The company had taken several emergency measures to clean the water in Visman, including increased water flow from other sources. Alongside, efforts were undertaken to restore the operations of the water treatment plan. The relentless efforts during the past one week have helped the company to address the environmental problems in an efficient manner and ensure safe-restart of operations.
