The institute offers grants for teachers, students and staff to tackle sustainability in their own schools.

SEATTLE (Waste Advantage): A new program is giving Vermont students the tools they need to learn about sustainability. Schools across Vermont are coming up with action plans to reduce their waste. The initiative comes from the School Compost & Recycling Action Plan Institute, or “SCRAPI.”

The institute offers grants for teachers, students and staff to tackle sustainability in their own schools. “It’s rare that there’s funding available. Let’s be honest. But there is funding available for this. In fact, a minimum of about $3,000 for whatever the project is for that matter. It’s also really creative. It’s really malleable,” said Mikhala Kaseweter, the Northwest Vermont Solid Waste Management District.

NWSWD is promoting the initiative. Each school will form a team and come up with ideas, whether that’s a composting, cutting back on single-use items, or exchanging materials.
