SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The Chemistry Industry Association of Canada (CIAC) has responded to the recent plans announced by the Minister of the Environment, Conservation and Parks to improve the Ontario Blue Box Recycling program. It also recognized the move towards implementation a harmonized EPR program. It noted that the EPR program is the most efficient way to boost recovery and recycling rates and develop a circular plastics economy.
While passing its comments, Elena Mantagaris, Vice President, CIAC Plastics Division stated that the EPR programs play a key role in circular economy, which in turn will foster sustained economic growth and improved environment for future generations. Responsibly managed plastics are the modern sustainable choice for a robust economy and healthy environment, she added.
CIAC noted that the innovative approach by the Ontario administration will help in making 100% of plastic packaging in Canada to be recyclable or recoverable by 2030. Furthermore, it will help the country reach the goal of having 100% of plastic packaging to be reused, recyclable or recycled by 2040.
