BHP Posted Notable Dip in Q3 FY24 Iron Ore Output

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): Delaware, BHP declared operational review for the quarter and nine-month period ended 31st March, 2024.

The quarterly iron ore production by the company during Q3 FY24 totalled 61 Mt, down significantly by 7%, upon comparison with 66 Mt of production reported during Q2 FY24. The dip in output was mainly on account of lower production in Western Australia Iron Ore (WAIO) due to wet weather, bushfire near Yandi and the impacts of the Rail Technology Programme (RTP1) tie-in activity, said the company news release.

The year-to-date production in FY24 registered marginal decline by 1% to 190 Mt, compared with 192 Mt during the corresponding period last fiscal. The WAIO iron ore production remained marginally lower due to heavy rainfall throughout Q3 FY24, continued RTP1 tie-in activity, bushfire near Yandi and the ongoing ramp up of the Central Pilbara hub. Meantime, Samarco production was boosted as a result of higher concentrate throughput.

Mike Henry, CEO, BHP noted that WAIO delivered another consistent period of production despite heavy rainfall.

Meantime, the company announced that the FY24 production guidance for WAIO remains unchanged at 250-260 Mt. Samarco’s FY24 production is likely to hit the upper end of the guidance range of 4-4.5 Mt.
